a vital role in supporting jobs. They now employ 226,400
Illinoisans.
- Illinois has proven to be an attractive location for international employers, ranking 5th in the United States in the number of employees supported by U.S. subsidiaries.
- In fact, the relative portion of
jobs in the state supplied by U.S. subsidiaries remains
significant. They provide the livelihood for 4.4%
of Illinois's private-sector workforce.

- U.S. subsidiaries support 61,200
manufacturing jobs in Illinois. Manufacturing companies
tend to have a strong "multiplier" effect on the economy—stimulating
a substantial amount of activity and jobs in other
sectors through their demand for inputs from other
suppliers.
- Almost 9% of manufacturing jobs in Illinois are
supported by U.S. subsidiaries.
- U.S. subsidiaries’ employment in
Illinois is heavily concentrated in manufacturing.
Nearly 30% of these jobs are in manufacturing industries.

- U.S. subsidiaries consistently support millions
of American jobs. They now employ 5.1 million Americans-or
4.4% of private sector employment.
- U.S. subsidiaries support an annual payroll of $335.9
billion.
- U.S. subsidiaries provide an average compensation
per U.S. worker of $66,042; this is 32% higher than
compensation at all U.S. companies.
- U.S. subsidiaries also spent $121 billion on plant
construction and new equipment.
- U.S. subsidiaries' share of U.S. manufacturing employment
represents almost 11% of American manufacturing jobs.
In August 2006, UPM Raflatac,
a U.S. subsidiary of a Finnish company and one of the
world's leading forest products companies, invested
$109 million to open a new manufacturing facility in
Dixon. The company's rapid growth in the United States
and increase in market share prompted UPM Raflatac to
build its second U.S. production factory, the other
one is located in Fletcher, NC. Heikki Pikkarainen,
president of UPM Raflatac said, "Our Fletcher operation
has been a great success
The Dixon factory will
enable us to grow further in North America." Construction
on the Dixon facility will begin in 2008, creating about
115 new jobs in the first two years and increase to
a total of 160 jobs within five years of operation.
