167,500 workers in Massachusetts.
- Massachusetts has proven to be
an attractive location for international employers,
ranking 12th in the United States in the number of
employees supported by U.S. subsidiaries.
- In fact, the relative portion of
jobs in the state supplied by U.S. subsidiaries remains
significant. They provide the livelihood for nearly
6% of Massachusetts's private-sector workforce.
- Massachusetts ranks 7th in the country in the share
of its workforce supported by U.S. subsidiaries.

- U.S. subsidiaries support 31,700
manufacturing jobs in Massachusetts. Manufacturing
companies tend to have a strong "multiplier" effect
on the economy—stimulating a substantial amount of
activity and jobs in other sectors through their demand
for inputs from other suppliers.

of American jobs. They now employ 5.1 million Americans-or
4.4% of private sector employment.

per U.S. worker of $66,042; this is 32% higher than
compensation at all U.S. companies.

represents almost 11% of American manufacturing jobs.
Last year, Nokia,
a U.S. subsidiary of a Finnish company, and the Massachusetts
Institute of Technology announced the opening the Nokia
Research Center, a joint project aimed at developing
state-of-the-art in communications technologies. Located
five minutes from MIT's Computer Science and Artificial
Intelligence Laboratory, the new research center in
Cambridge will have approximately 20 researchers from
MIT and 20 researchers from Nokia. Nokia, a global telecommunications
company, will invest 23.8 million dollars into the new
facility. Overall, the creation of the new research
facility is expected to create 100 new jobs in the region.
