In February 2007,Toyota Motor Corp, a U.S. subsidiary of a Japanese company and one of the world's largest automobile manufacturers announced a $1.3 billion investment for a manufacturing plant near Tupelo. Increased demand in North America prompted Toyota to greatly expand the Tupelo facility's production capacity. The plant will build 150,000 Highlander crossover utility vehicles annually. The factory, due to open in 2009, will initially employ 2,000 factory workers.
