  • U.S. subsidiaries in North Carolina play a vital role in supporting jobs. They now employ 192,200 North Carolinians.
  • North Carolina has proven to be an attractive location for international employers, ranking 10th in the United States in the number of employees supported by U.S. subsidiaries.
  • In fact, the relative portion of jobs in the state supplied by U.S. subsidiaries remains significant. They provide the livelihood for nearly 6% of North Carolina’s private-sector workforce.
  • North Carolina ranks 8th in the country in the share of its workforce supported by U.S. subsidiaries.

  • U.S. subsidiaries support 76,800 manufacturing jobs in North Carolina. Manufacturing companies tend to have a strong “multiplier” effect on the economy—stimulating a substantial amount of activity and jobs in other sectors through their demand for inputs from other suppliers.

  • U.S. subsidiaries provide an average compensation per U.S. worker of $66,042; this is 32% higher than compensation at all U.S. companies.
  • U.S. subsidiaries also spent $121 billion on plant construction and new equipment.
  • U.S. subsidiaries' share of U.S. manufacturing employment represents almost 11% of American manufacturing jobs.


In June 2007, Honda Aircraft Company, a U.S. subsidiary of a Japanese company and jet manufacturer, announced plans to invest $100 million for a 369,000 square foot Headquarters and Honda Jet Product Facility. The facility will be located at Piedmont Triad International (PTI) airport in Greensboro. The new HondaJet manufacturing headquarters is expected to create 300 new jobs. This will be Honda's first-ever commercial aircraft and Honda's seventeenth major manufacturing plant in North America.
